Online PhD in Eastern Orthodox Theology
In order to address the need to train highly qualified experts in Orthodox Christian theology, notably for interfaith work, EUCLID offers an online PhD in Eastern Orthodox Theology which aims at offering a truly comprehensive and doctoral level of education to qualified applicants. This program is unique and of special interest due to its low tuition, non-resident model, and presentation by EUCLID, an international intergovernmental organization with a university charter.
It is of special interest to Orthodox and non-Orthodox graduates in the Global South, notably in the canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. This public program can also be combined, through a dual degree option, with a degree from an ecclesiastical institution (in this case the St Gregory Nazianzen Orthodox Institute, under the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Mexico).
Audience
Its purpose is to prepare highly qualified experts able to make a contribution to intra-Orthodox, ecumenical, and inter-religious dialogue. Competency in Easterh Orthodox theology may in some cases be of interest to higher education institutions, as well as ecclesiastical bodies globally.
The EUCLID programs in Eastern Orthodox Theology, with hierarchical blessing, has also trained students in North America for ordination, and has been registered with the American Assembly of Bishops Committee for Theological Education.

Theology is often studied within institutions that are directly affiliated with the related religious body, but EUCLID shows that in this particular case, Orthodox Christian theology can be studied in the context of a public, intergovernmental organization. Within the framework of its inter-religious dialogue mandate, EUCLID has designed a comprehensive and challenging online doctoral degree in Orthodox theology (PhD classification) which is presented here with full documentation of syllabus and faculty resources, as well as total tuition.
This comprehensive information will enable students globally to determine if this program is suitable for them.
In accordance with international guidelines, this distance (non resident) PhD program in Orthodox theology represents 90 credits of academic coursework (the dissertation counting for 25 credits) beyond the Bachelor’s degree. Most students must complete 20-40 credits of coursework prior to commencing work on the dissertation.
Possible areas of specialization include:
- Theology and Psychotherapy
- Temple Theology and Liturgical Studies
- Modern Orthodox theologians
- Ecclesiology
- Ecumenical relations / Inter-religious dialogue
- Advanced Scriptural Studies
Both programs (Master’s and Doctorate) can be offered as joint degree programs with the Saint Gregory Nazianzen Orthodox Institute (an academic unit of the Universidad Rural de Guatemala, and under the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Mexico) in order to enjoy ecclesiastical oversight and approval.
