Dr. Sharew Niguse

Senior Lecturer

Sharew Niguse, PhD, is an accomplished public health professional with over 15 years of experience in program management, research, and Social and Behavior Change (SBC) across East and Southern Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific. He holds a PhD in Global Health and Health Systems from EUCLID University, where his dissertation focused on childhood vaccination determinants in Ethiopia. Currently serving as an SBC Specialist at UNICEF's Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, he has provided technical leadership and capacity building for 21 country offices in nutrition, community health, and MHPSS. His prior roles include Nutrition SBC Advisor at SNV Ethiopia, SBC Specialist with UNICEF in Kiribati and Jordan (polio outbreak response), and Health Communication Specialist at WHO Ethiopia. He has also led major HIV impact assessments at ICAP Columbia University and supported Ethiopia's Ministry of Health on NTD elimination and national SBC guidelines.

Research & Interests + Publications:

Dr. Niguse’s research interests center on behavioral determinants of maternal and child health, including vaccine uptake, dietary diversity, and nutrition-sensitive interventions. His published work includes studies on egg production combined with SBC to improve child and maternal dietary diversity, as well as barriers to optimal childhood vaccination and MDR-TB prevention practices. Ongoing ethnographic and qualitative research explores diet diversity in Burundi and frontline health worker motivation in Ethiopia. He is passionate about translating research into actionable programming and has extensive experience designing and delivering capacity-building trainings for government ministries, NGOs, and frontline health workers. His teaching interests focus on applied SBC strategy development, implementation research methods, health systems strengthening, and risk communication in emergency settings.

Students benefit from professors’ real-world experience in global affairs, sustainable development, diplomacy, and related fields, gaining practical insights that complement the formal curriculum.
