Dr. Shewayiref Geremew

Senior Lecturer

Experienced Biostatistician, Public Health Researcher, and University Lecturer with a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and over 15 years of progressive experience in academia, public health research, data management, and monitoring and evaluation of large-scale health programs. Extensive experience collaborating with international NGOs, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, higher education institutions, and global health organizations, including the World Health Organization. Demonstrated expertise in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, academic supervision, research leadership, scientific writing, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong background in advanced statistical analysis, epidemiological methods, operational research, and evidence-based public health decision-making, with proficiency in R, Python, SQL, GIS, and Power BI. Proven ability to lead complex research and data systems projects, develop innovative analytical solutions, support institutional capacity building, and contribute to academic excellence in higher education and international public health settings.

Research & Interests + Publications:

Dr. Geremew’s teaching interests center on biostatistics, epidemiology, and statistical tools for global health research, including courses such as Biostatistics (IPH-STAT), Statistical Tools for Global Health Research (IPH-IT), and Epidemiology I/II. His research focuses on applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to public health, survival analysis, longitudinal data modeling, infectious disease surveillance, non-communicable diseases (e.g., diabetes, cancer), and global burden of disease studies. He has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles, with 12 as first author, on topics including pediatric cancer survival disparities, HIV/AIDS longitudinal outcomes, under-five mortality, water quality and sanitation, maternal health, and tuberculosis control. His work has appeared in journals such as PLOS ONE, Malaria Journal, Tropical Medicine and Health, and Advances in Public Health, accumulating 347 citations and an h-index of 7 (ResearchGate, March 2026). He also contributed to the 2021 National and subnational Health Atlases of Ethiopia (12 editions) as an analyst and statistician, and has self-published three introductory guides on business analytics, data science, and data analytics.
