Prof. Dr. Ernst von Schwarz

Prof Ernst von Schwarz is Professor of Medicine and Bioethics

Prof. Dr. Ernst von Schwarz, MD, PhD, FESC, FACC, FSCAI, is a world-renowned, triple board-certified clinical and academic cardiologist. He serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, as well as a Professor of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. With a medical education from the University of Vienna in Austria and Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, and a second doctorate in Roman Catholic Theology, Dr. von Schwarz brings a unique dual perspective of medicine and faith to his work. He has served in key leadership roles, including as Director of Cardiology and the Heart Institute at Southern California Hospital, Chairman of the Pacific Heart Medical Group, and Chief Medical Officer of the Dr. von Schwarz Anti-Aging and Stem Cell Institute. He is a sought-after expert witness, a regular medical news contributor on TV and radio, and a prolific speaker at premier international scientific conferences.

Prof. von Schwarz's teaching interests are deeply interdisciplinary, bridging clinical medicine, bioethics, and theology. He is a core faculty member at the EUCLID School of Global Health and Bioethics, where he teaches courses in bioethics and academic medicine, drawing on his PhD in Roman Catholic Theology. He is also recognized for his unique concept of "theologic medicine," which integrates religious and spiritual perspectives into medical practice and bioethical decision-making. In clinical settings, he is dedicated to training the next generation of specialists in end-stage heart failure, cardiac transplantation, and interventional cardiology—areas he lists as his primary clinical interests. Furthermore, as a thought leader in stem cell therapies, his academic courses and lectures focus heavily on regenerative medicine, helping students understand not only the scientific mechanisms but also the complex ethical frameworks necessary for its responsible application.

Research & Interests:

With over 150 scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals, Prof. von Schwarz is considered a worldwide pioneer in the field of stem cell research. In 1996, he became the first in the world to use embryonic cells in experimental animal studies to demonstrate tissue regeneration and organ function improvement, laying the groundwork for decades of subsequent investigation. His recent works include the books The Secret World of Stem Cell Therapy (2022), which provides a comprehensive overview of the science and clinical applications of stem cell therapy, and Ethics of Modern Stem Cell Research and Therapy (2024). Beyond his stem cell investigations, his research extensively covers advanced heart failure management, cardiac transplantation, and sexual function in cardiac disease. He is credited with identifying hibernating myocardium and creating a scientific nomenclature for the condition of myocardial bridges through clinical studies using micro-transducers within the coronary arteries. From a bioethical perspective, his unique theological background has led him to examine the intersection of faith and cutting-edge medical technology, as seen in his book The Secrets of Immortality (2023), which offers a theological approach to the scientific quest for everlasting life.

Faculty Relationships at EUCLID:

At EUCLID, faculty interactions are intentionally personal, responsive, and relationship-centered. Students connect with professors primarily through direct email and scheduled Zoom sessions, creating regular opportunities for substantive dialogue rather than one-way communication.

Professors respond promptly to emails with detailed, constructive feedback and are readily available for one-on-one Zoom meetings to discuss coursework, research direction, thesis development, or career goals. These interactions are not limited to academic questions; they often evolve into ongoing mentorship relationships where faculty serve as professional and academic role models. Students benefit from professors’ real-world experience in global affairs, sustainable development, diplomacy, and related fields, gaining practical insights that complement the formal curriculum.

The emphasis is on genuine relationship building. Many students develop lasting professional connections with their professors, who actively support their academic progress and post-graduation objectives. This accessible, human-centered faculty model is a defining feature of the EUCLID experience, designed to foster intellectual growth, professional maturity, and meaningful scholarly collaboration.
