The resulting thesis is expected to be a substantial, publishable scholarly work that makes an original contribution to the field and positions the candidate as a subject-matter expert.

It is designed to develop advanced expertise in environmental monitoring and data analysis, sustainable resource management, environmental and social impact assessment, global environmental governance, international environmental law, systems thinking, and policy implementation. Strong emphasis is placed on UN frameworks and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ecological economics, biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, water security, and transboundary environmental challenges, particularly as they relate to the Global South and developing nations.
